This image is of a personal friend (Clive) and comes with a special story. In the summer of 2003 I was diving on the US Coast Guard Cutter "Duane" in Key Largo. I was on the foredeck and saw a youngish Hawksbill turtle against the port gunnel. As I moved close to get a photo I realized he was not aware of my presence and might even be dead. I put down the camera and moved close, as I gently lifted the back edge of his carapice he woke up and began to swim away quite sluggishly. He only made it about 6 inches off the deck before he was stopped by the snarl of monofilament fishing line tangled around his tail and rear flippers. It took nearly 5 minutes to free him from the tangle. When he was free I gave him another lift, he moved slowly at first but once he realized he was loose he took off quickly for the surface and a much needed breath. I never got a picture of Clive that day, but he has posed for me several times since. For an entire year I saw Clive every time I went to the Duane, usually he would surface and float very near my boat. Clive disappeared from the Duane for most of 2004 (possibly a mating migration) but he is back now. He doesn't seem to remember me anymore but thats ok, I'll always recognize him.
